$2.2 Million Renovation Underway at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center

DeKalb, Illinois – June 11, 2018 – As part of a $2.2 million upgrade, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center is launching the first of several phased construction projects, which will bring significant improvements to the facility for patients and staff members. The final phase of construction will be completed by early 2019.

Three new infusion bays, and main registration desk, with individual privacy bays, will enhance the patient experience. Construction includes a new nurses’ station, new exam area, Radiology-Oncology waiting room and shared physician office space. The in-house pharmacy will be completely upgraded, and new furniture, carpeting and flooring throughout the center will be renovated.

“A total of six exam rooms – three medical oncology rooms and three multi-specialty rooms – are being added,” said Robert A. Bayer, MD, medical director, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center “The additional space, especially with the multi-specialty rooms, will enable more Northwestern Medicine specialists to hold consultations with patients to provide care, close to home.”

Additional renovations include the installation of a dedicated, state-of-the-art teleconferencing system which will allow physicians at the Cancer Center to more effectively and productively collaborate with leading experts within the Northwestern Medicine family.

“The teleconferencing upgrades will enhance our Tumor Board meetings, in which twenty to thirty physicians from different specialties meet regularly to review cancer cases and share knowledge,” said Dr. Bayer. “This collaborative approach provides our patients access to the highest levels of academic medicine, clinical trials and new approaches.”

The Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center opened in 2010 as a newly built replacement for the previous location in the Kishwaukee Professional Building, bringing radiation and oncology services together under one roof in an integrated, comprehensive center.

The Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Cancer Center is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
